Description:

The Manatee (the Mermaid of Columbus and appropriately called the “Sea Cow”) makes its winter home in Crystal River and the other rivers of the suncoast. When the gulf waters cool, the Manatee moves into the spring-fed rivers with their constant year round temperature of 72 degrees.

Manatees are harmless, gentle creatures, and because they are air-breathing mammals, they must stay near the water surface. They are huge beasts and though they may grow to be 15 feet long and weigh as much as 1500 pounds, Manatees are vegetarians and feed on submerged plants growing near the surface of our streams and canals.
